Story from Matsaya Puran regarding Vastu Purusha

Long long ago Lord Shiva fought against the demon named Andhka and killed him. While fighting with demon, he began to sweat profusely and a man was born of the drops of Shiva’s sweat. He looked very cruel and was very hungry. He began to do penance to appease Lord Shiva and get a boon from him. Shiva was pleased with his penance and appeared before him. The devotee prayed to Shiva, “Oh Lord! Please permit me to eat away all the three worlds.” Shiva said,” Let it be so.” The devotee’s joy knew no bounds. He got possession on all the three worlds and first he was ready to eat the terrestrial world (Bhooloka). Then the celestial (Devatas), Brahma, Shiva and the demons (Rakshasas) also were terrified and caught hold of the devotee encircling him.

Vaastu Purusha, being arrested like this, said to the Gods, “Oh, Celestial (Devtas) Beings! You have all caught hold of me and tied me on all the sides. How long shall I be like this, in this position hanging my head down like a prisoner? What shall I eat? Listening to those words, the celestial beings said, “Today is Bhadrapada Shukla Triteya, Saturday and `Visakha Star’; So you lie down here on the ground changing your position once in three months, i.e. from `Bhadraspada’ to `kartik’ you lie down putting your head in the eastern direction and your feet towards the west. During the months of “Margashira”, `Pusham’ and `Magha’, you lie down towards the south looking towards the west and put your feet towards the north during the months of `Phalgun’, `Chaitra’ and `Vaisakh’ put your head towards the west and put your head towards the west and put your feet towards the north during the months of `Phalgun’, `Chaitra’ and `Vaisakh’ put your head towards the west and feet towards the east., looking towards the north; in the months of `Jyestha’, `Ashadha’ and `Sravana’, put your head towards the North and the feet towards the south and look towards the east. Whatever side you may turn, you will have to lie down on the left side only. You will be known as `VAASTU PURUSHA’. You will tease the people, to your heart’s content, who construct buildings and temples, dig wells and tanks on the side towards which you see and in the direction towards which you hold your feet. You may trouble and even devour those people who construct the aforesaid buildings and temples etc. in the direction where you lay your head and back, those who lay foundation-stone without worshipping you or without satisfying you with “Homa” and the like. Then the Vaastu-Purusha was quite satisfied.

Since then the worship of Vaastu-Purusha has been in vogue and it has become compulsory for those who want to construct any kind of building.

Worshipping Vastu Pursha

Vasturajvallabh has given the places where Vastu Purush is to be worshipped. It is said that while constructing palace, house, well, pond, renovation of old house, performing homa, and starting of any work Vastu Purush is worshipped. It was said that if it is not worshipped then the native would face a lot of problems. It is directed that the Vastu Purush is worshipped which has one thousand squares. The normal Vastu Purush has 64 boxes and eight boxes. While planning a village, minister’s house or town the Vastu Purush of sixty boxes should be worshipped, for construction of house eighty one boxes Vastu Purush is worshipped, while renovation forty nine boxes Vastu Purusha and for palace one hundred and for construction of well hundred and ninety six is told in the classics.

It is further given the deities of the vastu Purusha. Forty five celestial beings out of whom thirty two from without and thirteen from within caught hold of the devotee. The thirty two celestial beings are:-

1. Ish, 2. Parjanya, 3. Jaya, 4. Indra, 5. Surya, 6. Barisham, 7. Sadya, 8. Akash, 9. Agni, 10. Pushna, 11. Vitatha, 12. Yama, 13. Kritanta, 14. Gandharva, 15. Bringavaja, 16. Mriga, 17. Pitatra, 18. Darepale, 19. Sugriva, 20. Pushpadanata, 21. Varuna, 22. Datiya, 23. Sesha, 24. Yakshma, 25. Roga, 26. Naga, 27. Mukhya, 28. Bhallata, 29. Soma, 30. Sapra, 31. Aditi, and 32. Diti.

All these 32 celestial beings are out of the limits of the devotee whereas the following thirteen beings are within his limits:-

1. Apa, 2. Savita, 3. Indrajaya, 4. Rudra, 5. Marichi, 6. Savitri, 7. Vivaswan, 8. Vishnu, 9. Mitra, 10. Rudra, 11. Prithvidhara, 12. Apavatsa, and 13. Brahma

In Vedic Architecture, Vaastu Purush is present in each and every plot whether it is big or small. He has a fixed and peculiar body. His head remains hanging down and his body is spread all over the length and breadth of the ground. The platform on which the building stands that is considered seat of the Vastu Pursha. The second floor of the building is considered chest of the vastu Pursha. The end part of the floor is considered as part of the shoulders. The lower part of the tomb of the building is considered as neck of the pursha and tomb finally as head.

We can divide the Vastu Pursha as per the five elements in the universe as under:-

1. Mind (tomb) is considered as sky.

2. Shoulders (Sun Rays) are considered as fire.

3. Navel (Bed room etc.) is said to place of air.

4. Knee (Plinth of the building) is considered as earth element.

5. Leg (taps/WC/water tank etc.) is considered the place of the water element.

There is an interesting story in the MATSYA PURAN in which the birth of Vaastu Purusha is narrated. By reading that story one knows why the worship of the Vaastu Purusha is necessary before beginning construction of any building.

These are the great five elements. Each of the elements has a proper position on our property and in our home. When the elements are correctly positioned, they become balanced and create the perfect vibrations. Then the positive effects of the elements will flow. Nature automatically cooperates with the soul and the life. In order to live a happy and successful life, you have to take protection in God’s elements, the roots of the tree of Vaastu, the pancha pranas, the five life forces of Vaastu.

Friendship between the elements

Earth and water are mutual friends. Air and Fire are also friendly to each other. Water and fire, earth and air are inimical to each other. Therefore, while doing construction work this balance is maintained in the home.

Vastu Directions

The different directions and sectors of a house/plot are assigned to different Gods and Guardians. These sectors, when constructed according to the nature of the God, lead to complete harmony and bring in prosperity, good thought and sound health to people living inside. In this section we would learn about the guardians and god of these directions.

Generally there are four main directions. The East, The West, The North, and The South and they are further divided in sub directions, The South-East, The South-West, The North-West and The North-East. Every direction has its own importance In Vastu Shastra.

1. East- East direction is governed by Lord Indra. As the sun rises from East, hence, this direction is given the first position. It gives prosperity and wealth. In all there are nine Gods who are guardians of this direction. They are Ish, Parjanya, Jayant, Indra, Sun, Satya, Bhrush, Akash and Agni.

2. West- West direction is governed by Lord Varuna who controls the rain and water. The Guardians of the West direction are Rog, Pap, Shesh, Asur, Varun, Pushpadevta, Sugriv, Dwarpal, Pitar. Out of them Rog, Pap, Asur, Dwarpal and Pitar are having cruel powers.

3. North- Lord Kuber who has immense stores of riches governs this direction. The other guardians are Diti, Aditi, Sarpa, Som, Bhalat, Mukhya and Nag. All these are auspicious and gives happiness and prosperity.

4. South- Lord Yama governs this direction and Usha, Vitatha, Yama, Krutanta, Gandharva, Bhrungraj, Mriga are among guardians. The South direction is banned for all auspicious functions.

5. South-East- This direction lies between the south and the east directions. Agni governs this direction which is used for yajana and burying Vastuprusuh. The kitchen should always be in this direction.

6. South-West- The corner between the South and the West direction is known as the South –West direction Nairuti (Putna demonises) is the authority of this direction. Therefore, it is banned for all auspicious functions. This direction should be filled with heavy unmovable goods. Pits, wells, septic tanks, water storage tank, toilets or bathrooms should not be constructed in this direction. This is because cruel forces are contaminated or get dissolved in the pits or water and it can prove harmful to man.

7. North-West- This direction is in the corner of the North and the West directions. This is the direction of Vayu Devta. Air is necessary for all living beings; therefore, tall structure should not be built in this direction. Tall trees should not be planted in this direction.

8. North-East- The corner of the north and the east directions is known as the north –east direction. God himself rules this direction. Therefore, there should be no construction is this direction. Toilets, sundry room etc. should not be built in this direction. However, wells, underground tanks, boring wells etc. give auspicious results, if built in this direction.

Ancient Hindu tradition believes that the Earth was formed 460 million years ago and it started out from being just a big fiery ball. Hindu theory has it that it possessed magnetic forces that cause a surface to be formed out of the rocks that melted through the passing of time. As magnets have it, there is the existence of two poles: the North Pole and the South Pole. Then there came the creation of space represented by the sky, the air inherent in space, or vacuum, the earth which is the solid surface, the water which comprises ¾ of the earth’s surface and the fire which is natural to the Sun.

1. Sky something that denotes space, a vacuum endless and infinite yet holds an unimaginable power that can reach out earthly existence.

The height of the wall gives the sky factor in the house. If the height of the wall is short then the native will feel dizziness in the house and this element will not develop in them. Due to sky element flow of non-conventional energy continues in the house, hence, it is always recommended that the height of the house should be ten fts. There must be porthole in the house so that the sky element is received in the house without any hindrance. The central place which is known as Brahmsthanshould be open because the sky element enters in the house this place and the energy is circulated in the whole house.

2. Air the gas biologically needed by all living things on earth whether the subsistence or for ecological balance.

The specialty of this element is touch and word. This element enters in the house through the windows and doors. Brahmsthanis the perfect place for entry of this element in the house.

3. Water believed to be rainfall from the skies which filled up the gaps and low lying areas of the Earth.

Water is life. It is found is gaseous (clouds), solid (ice), and liquid forms. It is recommended that there should be correct ratio of water in the house which is combination of hydrogen and oxygen.

4. Earth that which was formed out of the molten rocks and which attracts all other elements because of its great magnetic force.

The South and North Pole of the earth are two magnetic poles of earth. The magnetic and gravitational power of the earth leaves its impact on living and non-living things. These magnetic waves continuously flow from both these poles. This flow is known as electro-magnetic flow. If the north portion of the house is low and the south portion is high then this energy will easily enter the house and will give benefic effect to the native and if vice versa the flow will stop. Magnetic rays travels in our body as they travel on the earth and if there will not be balance in both the energies then our mind will not work properly. That is why our seers have directed not to sleep in the northern direction because positive energy travels from head side and negative from leg side. If head is in northern direction then the positive rays clashes with the negative one and imbalance is created in the mind.

5. Fire the main source of life on earth. It plays an important part in vastu shastra since it is worshipped as the personification of God being the potential source of creation.

The oldest book on the earth is Rig-Veda and its very first couplet has the word agni in it which is clear that fire was the first thing which was explored by the man. The place assigned to this element is south-east direction of the home which is called agney kon. This place is best suited for construction of the kitchen in the home. Water source is never built in this place. The fire element is received by us through the Sun hence Sun is worshipped as a God. The windows should be constructed in such a manner that the sun rays enter in our home in early home. In noon the infra red rays of sun are not considered good for our body therefore the south-well wall of the house should be thick and high. Sun bath, through which we get vitamin D, is another source of getting energy from this element in the winter days.

Meaning-As per Vasturajvallabh, Lord Vishwakaram said that a place which blesses the native with son, affection from wife, directs him towards his duty, gives him all luxurious in his life, saves him from the heat of the Sun, rain and other natural calamities and is pious like temple is nothing but home and it is duty of the person to have these blessings only after constructing it.

This Shloka has made it clear that home is the first priority of the person and only after that he should think of his other duties. Our seers have written a lot of books on this subject and all of them emphasis upon having a home which should have a proper balance of all the five elements in a house.

Hinduism is of belief that our body also constitutes of five elements which are known as air, water, earth, fire and sky. On the same pattern there are five main deities in the Vedas which hold the ownership of every element. Vastu is nothing but balancing the five elements in their proper combination which creates a field of energy which supports life and its elements.

Vastu is the name of proper combination of five elements of life i.e. water, air, earth, fire and sky space. Vastu strives to maintain equilibrium as these elements influence, guide and change the living styles of not only human beings but also every living being on earth. Thus they influence our deeds, luck, behaviour and other basics of life. According to classics, every peace of land has some specific locations which are associated with some specific element. Each location has a god/goddess associated with it. If these forces are kept in their appropriate places, then there will be no disturbance. But if water is put in place of fire and wind in place of water or in any other combination, the forces will start acting accordingly and create disharmony and disturbance.

Vastu Shastra is believed to be the oldest science of Architecture. It is literally defined as – the Shastra (a branch of Vedic Literature), which deals with the knowledge of the topography and the design of any construction to be built for residence, worship or any other purpose. The word “vastu” in Sanskrit language is derived from the verb “vasa”, which means living, residing, lodding, etc. The word `vastu’ is defined in “Amara Kosha” as – Graharacanavacchinnabhumeh | Meaning: the plot of land suitable for the construction of a house for living is (the base of) vastu. According to the “Halayudha Kosha”-

Vastu Samkshepato Vakshye rahadau Vighnanashanam | Ishanakonadarabhya Hyekashitipade Tyajet||

Meaning: In short, vastukala (the art of vastu) is the art of house construction, which teaches perfect (science and techniques of) designs starting from the ishana (east-north) angle so as to protect the house from all natural calamities and other adversities.

As details given in Samarangana Sutradhara of Bhoj Raja, Vastu Shastra teaches us above how we can lay out our house design so that we as human beings can get the maximum benefits of the natural forces given-off by nature. Before we get into details about vastu shastra, let us first have a clearer concept about the five elements and its significance to human life.

Vats means to reside and it is from the word that Vaastu is derived. It means “to reside” and was the ancient science of living.

Vastu is not architecture. It is much more than that. While architecture is the science of designing and constructing a building etc, the realm of Vastu is in the applied aspects of ATHARVAVEDA. This is an ancient science and one of the eminent features of our heritage.

In the ancient Sanskrit scriptures, Vastu means the place where Humans and God dwell. Fate, Karma and surroundings govern the life of a human being. The principles of Vastu can make life sweeter and negativities can be reduced.

Building a house in the Indian civilization was not only about brick & cement but it was considered as a living organism. Vastu – Purush was considered as the spirit of the house. The cardinal direction and sectors play a very important role. The waves from different directions have an impact and they were assigned to Brahma, Ishwar, Agni, Varun, Yam and the negative forces (Demon).

The common sense rules as that of ventilation and sunlight remain of utmost importance. The rules which rule the subtle energy and built effective environments are of importance and are today being applied and appreciated. The Earth is our mother and source of happiness as also the Sun that radiates heat and light. Their role have been tapped in the Principles of Vastu.

If the settings are as per the principles of Vastu, the thought, speech and action are supported by nature and that leads us to prosperity & happiness. The principles should not only be used in dwellings or premises but also used in town and country planning. Vastu countervails the negative planetary effects for sure based on sound principles of physics, engineering and the energy movement.

The science has great depth but in this book I have tried to explain the basics that are important to be kept in mind while selecting land, construction, building an office or residence and the interiors. Tips, remedies, colors and directions which are important have been dwelled.

As a book for your reference you will find it very useful. Also it could be a starting point for those who are interested in going deeper into the subject.

My endeavor has been to write it in a way that it demystifies Vastu for the common person and helps them using it practically.

All my books are the result of the inspiration provided by my father, Late Shri K.C. Saksena and the blessings of my mother Dr Krishna Saksena who is my greatest inspiration today.

Mercury in Pisces, Jupiter and Dragon-Tail in Cancer, Mars in Scorpio. In this connection Dragon-Tail and Mars are in trinal aspects. Hence, Mercury will have to overcome major (two) inimical planets Dragon-Tail and Mars and hence it is an indication that the native’s intellect cannot work even though Jupiter is exalted in the same north direction. Because Jupiter is in Retro motion, the native’s knowledge and intellect goes down. Anyhow, at some time, during his sojourn of life, while coming across a Guru (a learned Master), the progress and prosperity of the native comes to surface.

One the younger brother/sister of the native enjoys happiness, but sometimes some litigation appears on the surface, but due to some cooperation and influencing factors, problems gets solved and leading to prosperity and happiness.

Near the birth place of the native there will be an old temple, pertaining to the Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva and Lord Vinayaka.

Mercury is debilitated, but the is retro in position. When he becomes retro he will have the rear aspect towards Aquarius, where Aquarius is occupied by Saturn and Dragon-Head. They are close friends to Mercury and hence the strength of Mercury does not go down completely.

Let us discuss how Mercury becomes debilitated?

Jupiter in Virgo, Mercury in Pisces. In this chart Mercury is debilitated according to position of planets. But they are having exchange of their positions. When Mercury comes in his own house (Virgo) due to interchange with Jupiter then Mercury becomes exalted. Therefore it need not be considered as debilitation of Mercury and the native, although in material aspects may look a bit dull but his progress and prosperity during his sojourn of life are quite tremendous and by knowledge he can claim a greater degree of importance and this is because of direct aspect between Mercury and Jupiter who are in 7^th sign to each other. Therefore he can attract the public, because of his knowledge too. Anyhow, the native will have to go to distant places for gaining knowledge (traveling aspect).

Mercury is in Pisces with his friends Dragon-Head and exalted Venus. Mercury is really debilitated in Pisces but because of his two friends combination debilitation reduces to some extent.

The native is quite an intelligent one and although looks on the surface, a bit dull, inside he is quite intelligent and he can rise to any occasion. He enjoys wealthy aspects, having female attractions. Live in a two-storied house and will have extra marital affairs.

One of the sisters of the native suffers due to difficulties, unhappiness in her family life.

Also, Mercury is the governing planet of Holy Water (pertaining to Lord Maha Vishnu, in Sanskrit called “Vishnu Thirtha” and it indicates the native was born in place where there was Holy Pond/Holy water/Holy River, pertaining to the concept of Lord Maha Vishnu (because Mercury is the entwined embodiment concept of Lord Maha Vishnu as discussed in previous paragraphs).

Regarding health: Such native must take regarding problems pertaining to Tonsils and extra growth of flesh in nose portion (which may require some minor surgical operation – depending upon the degree).

Mercury is exalted in Virgo and is with inimical planet Mars. So by nature, the native will have quarreling aspects. The native can be quite calculative. Mercury is intellect. Mars is egoism and hence free-flow of expression of intelligence becomes cheered due to conjunction of Mars. Hence, such a native may not fare well in domestic affairs and its happiness etc.

In female charts she has to have an affairs with another man, besides her husband. Because, she cannot stay with her husband for substantial time. The same remains for a male chart also.

Common to both male/female chart: The native’s brother/brothers will not have harmonious relationship among them.

In case if Sun is in Leo, the two planets Mercury and Mars comes in second to Sun. Then the native’s father will be courageous, calculative, who earns well through business/correspondence/accountancy field.

Mercury is exalted who is with enemy Dragon-Tail where Dragon Tail is the controller and hence the native cannot express his intelligence/intellect freely.

If a woman wears saree, then it called a saree. If a man wears Dhoti, then the Dhoti resembling a saree can be use either as Dhoti or a saree (depending on the circumstances).

Also it can be noted here that three planets, who are generally considered as male planet are also female planets.

Mercury:

The embodying concept of Lord Vishnu – indicates Forehead (Haalala) – intelligence – intellect. Because Sun is the soul, power of Sun radiates on Mercury, and according to Scriptures Sanskrit “Bhudhe Daat Buddhi Hi”.

Mercury is the reflection of Sun, where Sun is the lord, Mythologically speaking Mercury is the son of Moon. Moon by cunningness enjoys the wife of Sage Bruhaspatachrya – the resulting product being Mercury (also in Sanskrit called “Taara Chandra Samyoga”) and hence when Mercury is alone, He considered to be a female planet too.

Mercury indicates friend (of both sexes) and in female chart a friend. Mercury is the embodying concept of the Lord Maha Vishnu – where The Lord Maha Vishnu assumes `Mohini’ Roopa (a female form during “Samudra Manthana” (churning of the great ocean) – Mercury is the government planet of Greens – Maternal uncle – younger sister – younger brother – mud walls – Skin – Crops – information – soft – attraction.

Friendly & inimical aspects of planets

Mercury

Mercury is intellect/intelligence. Sun is the soul power, Venus is wealth, Sun is atma, (The soul), Mercury is intellect and Mercury encircling Sun (Soul) – Sun is alpervading (being Atmakarka) – Sun is the Lord Mercury is Bhoodevi and Venus is Sridevi and hence for Mercury Soul & Venus (wealth and Lakshimikaraka) are friends. Mythologically speaking, Mercury and Venus are wives of Lord Maha Vishnu. Mercury is female (when alone) being the embodying concept of Lord Maha Vishnu (Lord Maha Vishnu assumes female – Mohini Avtar during the Great churning of the Ocean for the destruction of Demons). Mercury is guided by Soul, Sanskrit version – Bhode Dat Buddhi HI.

Mercury as per Bhrigu Nadi System

Every person needs intelligence either for small or big issues and besides power, intelligence is extremely important. Even for eating a fruit, it requires some intelligence. If mind is depressed (Moon), even then intelligence can be made to exercise. Mercury is the only planet which is exalted in his own house. Mercury is the embodiment/entwined concept of Lord Maha Vishnu (The Saviour). So, the Lord, being himself The Saviour of all the universe, need not go to some other house to exhibit his exaltation. That is why in versions of Sanskrit it is said – “Mukhe Vishnuhu”. And whatever is in mind (even in physical aspects) the same appears on the face. Face is the index of mind and also because, the Saviour is all in all.

So, Mercury governs intelligence and intellect and man by intellect and intuition would be able to know as forethought many things of future.

Mercury is exalted in Virgo with Sun. In any sign if there is Mercury with Sun in the same degree (what called in Sanskrit `Astangata’), then power of Mercury reduces to some extent. The native may be intelligent, philosophical, but varies in intelligence and more so the intellect.

Anyway, Mercury, unless he sheds his sting of the 8^th lordship and functions as lord of the 11^th only, is baneful.

The Moon lord of the 9^th is auspicious, though some say she is also Badhakadhipathi and cite the case of the Moon in the 8^th having a father 90 year old. Anyway, the full Moon, as the lord of the 9^th, must be regarded as auspicious indeed. I give below the horoscope of a native who though B.A., B.L., started in Judicial Ministerial Service as a clerk on Rs. 40 per month, Even then, I confidently predicted his rise to a Gazetted Officer’s grade and high preferments for him. I banked on the Neechabhanga Raja Yoga of Mars ruler of the Ascendant due to exalted Moon lord of the 9^th in the 7^th, and on the Sun lord of the 10^th placed in the 5^th.

I am glad to say that no only did he rapidly rise to a Sheristedar’s post but he was drafted to the Law-Secretariat, wherefrom after selection on paper as a District Munshiff he was wafted to the Central Law Secretariat drawing a four digit pay, much sooner than heh could have done if the was in regular Judicial Service, Now, I think he is in High Judicial Service in Goa. Lord of the 10^th in the 5^th is very good; and, in this case, the Sun lord of the 10^th is in the 9^th from the ruler of the Ascendant, in the 9^th with distinct Neechabhanga Raja-Yoga. Verily, the Sun and the Moon (lords of the 10^th and the 9^th) are the most important planets and Yogakarakas for Scorpio. Jupiter comes very close next Subha.

In an earlier issue, I believe I gave the following horoscope, as an instance of Uchabhanga i.e. a marred Yoga:

The native is a congenital cripple (lame) of stunted growth, who cannot write and could not benefit by tuition. Mars lord of the 1^st (and the 6^th) is exalted but has Uchabhanga due to the baneful aspect of debilitated Saturn. Mere Rahu in the 12^th cannot and does not cause lameness. The evil octopus is debilitated Saturn aspecting the 8^th lord of Lagna and Rahu. He is above want, being a son of an officer. Mark Jupiter from the 5^th aspecting the 9^th and the 1^st. But I am afraid the Dasa of Saturn in the 6^th with Ketu and Venus luckily causing Shandatwa or impotency and allergy to sex in the lame native after the expiry of Jupiter’s period or even Jupiter’s Dasa Rahu sub-period may kill the native who has symptoms of pulmonary tuberculosis.

Another case of less marred Yoga, though for better than the above, is the horoscope of a male, given below:-

The fact, that the Sun and the Moon, the King and Queen of the planetary Logos, are the Yogakarakas factor Scorpio-Ascendant, as lords of the 10^th and the 9^th respectively is amply illustrated, in the horoscope of C.R. who was the first Indian Governor-General and is Bharata-Ratna, with the Sun lord of the 10^th in Scorpio-Ascendant and the full Moon lord of the 9^th exalted in Taurus in Kendra (the 7^th) Jupiter is in the 3^rd in debility; but, he has exchanged places with Saturn who is in Pisces. From Chandra-Lagna (natal Moon), which is stronger as the Moon is exalted in the 7^th (a Kendra), Saturn is lord of the 9^th and the 10^th, very good in the 11^th in Pisces; and, it is good, that Jupiter as the bad lord of the 8^th (and the 11^th) is in the 9^th in debility. Even when nearing 90, C.R. is mentally aleret and active-the Moon being strong and aspected by Jupiter.

By way of comparison and contrast, I shall give the horoscope of a native, with ordinary Yoga, but connected and happy.

The native, a B.A., entered Judicial Ministerial service as a Clerk and gradually rose to be the Sheristedar of the District Court and draws a pension of Rs. 100 per month only- Mark lords of the 1^st, the 9^th and the 10^th in the 12^th. But, as the only son of his parents, he inherited a good dwelling-house. (Mark Saturn lord of the 4^th in the 7^th having Digbala aspected by Jupiter). He was two sons and one daughter-see Rahu in the 5^th aspected by Jupiter. Jupiter, in Lagna with Digbala as lord of the 2^nd and the 5^th, is a divine asset and blessing, protecting one throughout life, and conferring calm due to contentment. Verily, as stated by Jataka Parijata, Jupiter strong in the Ascendant, especially, or in the 4^th, gives generally a happy life.

Mark Jupiter the excellent benefic for Scorpio occupying the 10^th with Mars, in the 7^th from the Moon (lord of the 9^th). Of course, the unique success of this self-made gentleman of study independence was due, not merely to Jupiter in the 10^th with the lord of Lagna (canceling the evil of the 6^th lordship of Mars) but also to two important Yogas. The first is:

(i) The presence of Gajakesari Yoga due to Jupiter in the 7^th from the Moon and Adhi Yoga, on account of Jupiter in the 7^th and Venus and Mercury in the 8^th from the Moon and

(ii) A rather rare Yoga described as `Ishtapala Yoga’ in Kapila-Nadi. This is caused by the association of the lord of the Lagna or Ascendant, with the two trinal lords of the 5^th and of the 9^th in a Kendra other than the 7^th. See Mahadeva’s Jataka Tattwa

Dharmapatyapou dhyoonomakendra Lagnapayuto rajadhirajaha

Meaning, that if the 5^th and the 9^th lords are associated with the lord of Lagna in a quadrant other than the 7^th, a king of kings is born. Sage Parasara and Bhava Kuthoohalahave made statements to the same effect. If fact, while Sage Parasara declares that

Sutheswaro dharmapadamyutas cheth

Lagneswaranapi yuto vilagne,

Sukhe athava mana grihasyat rajyabhishikto

Yadirajya vamsah.

Only the author of Bhava Kuihookala has given out that if the lords of the 1^st, the 5^th and the 9^th are together or in Samasaptama in a Kendra, the 1^st, the 4^th or the 10^th Raja Yoga results. This is a rather rare, if not unique Yoga, as already indicated. For, while the lord of Lagna combining with the lord of the 5^th or the lord of the 9^th is fairly common, the association of the lord of Lagna with both the trinal lords of the 5^th and the 9^th and that too, in a Kendra is uncommon. Under Lagna-Vichara V (Leo) I have, I believe, dealt with the horoscope of Mr. Lyndon Johnson, President of the U.S.A., born in Leo with the Sun (lord of the 1^st). Mars lord of the 9^th and Jupiter lord of the 5^th in the Ascendant, making him occupy the coveted White House. Despite the New Moon lord of the 12^th joining the combination showing “secret enemies”. I think the above formidable combination, coupled with Saturn lord of the 6^th in the 8^th, will enable him to weather many storms.

Let me now return to the Scorpio Ascendant without any further ado or digression. Mars, though lord of Lagna is not good as his 6^th lordship is likely to be dominant unless Chandra-Mangla or (Jupiter-Mars) Yoga transforms him on account of (the 1^st and the 5^th) or (the 1^st and the 9^th) combinations conducing to Yoga, despite Lagnadhipa being also the 6^th lord. In fact, there are case where Mars in the 12^th or in Neechabhanga have been found to be good to Scorpio-Ascendant natives.

Jupiter lord of the 2^nd and the 5^th having been already stated to be the best benefic generally (except, say in a case, where for instance Jupiter is very weak in the 3^rd and in debility), I shall proceed to consider the other planets.

Saturn, as the lord of the 3^rd and the 4^th, is ordinary and not good or bad for Scorpio. His 4^th lordship is good, but, he is far from a from a friend of the lord of Lagna, Mars. Hence, he is not well disposed. But, in the 3^rd in his own house, and in the 11^th a good place for Saturn to occupy, he is good generally. In the 6^th in debility, he affects the native’s mother and also native’s health, even when there is some Neechabhanga. And, he works havoc when in the 6^th in debility in Aries with Rahu or Ketu.

Venus lord of the 7^th and 12^th is important for one getting a good wife and enjoying life. But, on account of Kendradhipathya Dosh of Venus (due to the 7^th lordship) and Vrayadhipatya Dosha (or lordship of the 12^th), Venus is not good for Scorpio-Ascendant.

Mercury is the baneful lord of the 8^th and the 11^th. And the planet is also an enemy of Mars, the lord of Lagna. But, when placed in the 11^th, or in Lagna with Mars in the 11^th, his evil of the 8^th lordship is minimized, though not completely eliminated. In all other cases, he is evil as lord of the 8^th and the 11^th. In fact, there is a dictum that while the association or combination of the 9^th and the 10^th lords causes Raja Yoga, 8^th and the 11^th lord joining the same mars the Raja Yoga. In fact, this was verified in the case of a backward-class gentleman, M.A., who rose, in the Revenue Department to be a Deputy Collector. But, then on some changes, he was dismissed; and his suit in a Sub-Court was also dismissed. The case was a great eye-opener to me; for, Kapila Nadi had predicted that he would become a “Niyadhathipan” or lakhier on account of the combination of the 9^th, the 10^th and the11th lords in the 11^th, aspected by Jupiter. But, he had an unenviable career.

Frankly, I do not see, why his career was so spoiled, unless the shashtashtama-positions of Mars and Jupiter, the position of the lord of the the 12^th (though a natural banefic) in the 10^th, and the 9^th and the 10^th combination in the 11^th being married by the lord of the 8^th and the 11^th (though in the 11^th) could explain.

I have my own serious doubts, even now whether the given time and Lagna were correct, and whether, perhaps, it was a case of Libra-Ascendant.

I now give the horoscope (Chart No. 6) of a man of Puritanic Rigour, who is a profound scholar in the Vedas, including Sama-Veda, and shastras but, who, despite ordinary conditions, revels in a rigorous life of voluntary poverty by refusing to take any fees for astrological opinions and readings, though he is a reputed expert in Jyothisha.

Mark the exchange of lords of the 1^st and the 8^th contributing to Deerghayus but Kashtayus; and Hamsa Yoga due to Jupiter in the 4^th in his own house (though Jupiter is only lord of Kendras) aspecting and purifying Saturn in the 12^th (who is good as lord of the 6^th in the 12^th). He is greatly esteemed and honoured by His Holiness Sri Sringeri Sarada Pitadhipati Sankaracharya Swamigal and is going strong, despite a frail physical frame and spare body, at 74 or 75. Mark Jupiter and Venus, strongly posited, on either side of lord of Lagna, Mercury. While lesser mortals with only a fraction of his profound scholarship Mint money, he is highly contend and believes that honour is the highest wealth, and is held, by everyone including persons who hate Brahmins and revile them in highest regard. Venus, though strong in the 2^nd in own house, is a but spoiled due to Mandi in the 2^nd rendering Venus, the baneful Gulika-Bhavanadhipathi. And, what is more, Venus does not bless the lord of the Ascendant, Mercury, by conjunction. And Jupiter’s strength in the 4^th makes him a Vidya-Kesari) a lion among Vidwans) but is not so conducive to prosperity, as Jupiter is not the lord of a Kona (or time) in a Kendra, but is lord of a Kendra in a Kendra. His good wife is literally, a Rishi-Padhi. Such persons of rigorous puritanic habits, avoiding Parannam or food in another’s house) for, he cooks his own food, even in another Brahmin’s house) are rather rare, even among the Vedic scholars, in these days, and remind one of the late lamented Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya.

Scorpio or Vrischika – Ascendant

Scorpio or Vrishchika is the 8^th sign of the zodiac, a fixed sign, the negative house of Mars, and a Keeta (insect) Rasi Great men are not born in this Lagna or Ascendant, as frequently as in Taurus, Cancer, Leo or Virgo or Libra. For, very strong configurations are required to lift one both in this Keeta Rasi (insect-sign) suffering from the handicap that its owner is more the lord of the 6^th than the lord of the Ascendant, since Aries is the positive sign and Mooltrikona-Rasi of Mars lord of Lagna.

The best planet for this Ascendant is Jupiter owning the 2^nd and the 5^th. Alone among the different signs, Scorpio is the only one for which Jupiter is in unadulterated benefic, owning two good houses, the 2^nd and the 5^th – let alone the 2^nd lord who badly placed and afflicted becomes a maraca. For Aries Jupiter is, though mainly and predominantly lord of the 9^th, also the lord of the 12^th. For Cancer, he owns not only the 9^th but also baneful 6^th. For Leo he is the lord not only of the 5^th house but also of the 8^th house. For other Lagnas, except perhaps Pisces and Sagittarius, he suffers from Kendradhipathya Dosh or the evil of owning quadrants or he owns evil houses like 8^th and the 11^th for Taurus, the 3^rd and the 12^th for Capricorn and the 3^rd and the 6^th for Libra. Only for Scorpio the best benefic and Karaka for wisdom and wealth owns the 2^nd or house of wealth and the 5^th of Poorvapunyasthana. Such a Jupiter in the 10^th lifts a native in a spectacular fashion for he is lord of the 2^nd and the 5^th (trine) placed in a Kendra. Even at the risk of repetition, I should illustrate my point by citing the following horoscope of the late Sir, T. Sadasivier who rose from a Munsiff’s place to the position of a Judge of the Madras High Court and whose issues too were prosperous (mark the lord of the 5^th in the 10^th) a son was a I.C.S., another I.E.S., and a son-in-law started as a Munsiff and retired as a District Judge.

In an earlier issue, I have, I believe, given a copy of the horoscope of the late Muthu Ramalinga Thevar, as an instance of Yoga-bhanga or marred Yoga. He also a great scholar in Tamil and a fiery orator, thanks to Mercury-Venus in the Ascendant-Virgo. He was also a bachelor. But, his life proved to be a failure, though he was a semi-God among all Thevars, since the excellent combination of 1^st and 10^th and (2^nd and) 9^th lords in Lagna was marred, by the worst lord of 3^rd and 8^th (Mars) joining it and Saturn, lord of 6^th in 7^th aspecting it. Sun in 2^nd in debility also made him use words without weighing them, thereby incurring the severe wrath of those in power.

I have already given, in an earlier issue of this Magazine, the horoscope of the late Mr. P. Govinda Menon who was a Judge of the Madras High Court, and later, a Judge of the Supreme Court, in which capacity he died.

In Chart 3 Mark the combination of the lord of the 1^st and the 10^th house and the lord of the 2^nd and the 9^th, and the 5^th and 6^th lords in the 2^nd house where Venus is in Swakshetra, and Adhi-Yoga from the Moon, thanks to all the 3 benefics being in the 6^th and the 8^th from the Moon. Note, too, that Jupiter (lord of the 7^th Badhakasthana) and Mars (lord of the 8^th) are relegated to the 12^th.

The late Shri S.V. Ramamurthi, I.C.S., who acted as the Governor of Bombay, after a brilliant career as a highly independent I.C.S. Officer had Mercury and Venus in the 11^th for Virgo-ascendant, aspected by Jupiter from Scorpio (the 3^rd) from Lagna and in the 7^th from Jupiter.

Now, I give a difficult horoscope, presenting a ticklish problem to students of astrology.

Very few can expect this (Chart No. 4) to be the horoscope of a Brahmin, who, from very humble circumstances, passed the I.C.S. and has risen to be a High Court-Judge. For, after all, the 9^th and 10^th lords, Mercury and Venus, are combined, only in the 6^th; and, even the presence of Jupiter in the 11^th rendering the 6^th an Upachayasthana (instead of a Dushsthana) in this case, giving rise to Vasumathi Yoga, due to all the 3 benefics in Upachayas (6^th and 11^th) can explain prosperity or wealth, but not position. The key is furnished by a reading from Chandra Lagna, as Chandra Lagna is more powerful than Janma Lagna, Chandra (Moon) and Guru (Jupiter) having well-exchanged places and Jupiter aspecting the Moon in Jupiter’s house. And, Mars and Saturn, bad and baneful from the Ascendant, become the lord of the 2^nd and 9^th from Chandra Lagna, and lord of the 11^th respectively, And, Mercury, as lord of the 7^th (a Badhaka) and Venus, lord of the 3^rd and the 8^th from the Moon are well-relegated to the 12^th from Chandra Lagna. Of course, the Moon afflicted by natural malefic, though aspected by Jupiter connotes certain defects; and, the end of the Moon’s Dasa or the beginning of Mars Dasa may cause a very critical illness to the native which may be difficult for the native to tide over and survive.

Here is another horoscope (Chart No. 5), with Virgo-ascendant:-

The native’s father rose from an Amin’s place to a District Judgeship; And, the native entered service, as a District Munsiff but rose rapidly to a High Court Judgeship. Mark that lord of the 1^st and the 10^th is in the 9^th, whose lord Venus is exalted in a Kendra, aspected by Jupiter from Lagna-Kendra, indicating “Simhasanadhipati” meaning, in modern parlance, a High Court Judgeship. The 10^th is occupied by Mars and aspected by Saturn, though Saturn, as lord of the 6^th in the 8^th in debility, with Neechabhanga is good. The clue to the success, in some such cases, is, that important planets obtain more than 6 dots, and even 8 dots, in Ashtakavarga.

This is the horoscope of a Madras M.L.A. who got lakhs by adoption. He is a large-hearted gentleman, who was also in the election in 1967 for a second time on the Congress ticket in spite of the general Congress debacle in Madras, on account of his personal popularity. He is generous to a fault and is losing portions of his vast properties, by sales to liquidate liabilities, largely incurred due to his great generosity. Mars and Ketu in the 2^nd are not good; nor is the aspect of Mars on the 9^th good. But, Mercury in the 4^th giving Bhadra-Yoga and Jupiter lord of the 10^th in the 9^th aspecting Saturn lord of the 9^th (and he 8^th) in the 1^st are towers of strength.

Chart No. 3 is the horoscope of one who passed the old F.C.S. examination (now Indian Audit and Accounts Service) and rose to be Accountant-General on Rs. 3,000 per month. And, even after retirement, he was appointed as the Financial Adviser to a (princely) native State. Mark the excellent 9^th and 10^th Yoga, due to Jupiter lord of the 10^th and Saturn lord of the 9^th exchanging places and Mercury and Venus in the 11^th. There is also Chandra-Mangla Yoga, good for finance- 333.

Virgo or Kanya-Ascendant

KANYA or Virgo is the 6^th house of the zodiac. Its lord is Mercury, who, alone among all the planets, is exalted in (the first part of Virgo) his own house.

Mercury, lord of Lagna and the 10^th is a very important planet, and Yogakarka for natives born in Virgo-ascendant. He is best in Lagna or the 10^th his own house, forming Bhadra Yoga but must be preferably free from the affliction of Saturn lord of the 6^th (Mooltrikona) through also of the 5^th, and especially Mars, the worst planet for Virgo-ascendant, as the baneful lord of the 3^rd and the 8^th.

Venus lord of the 2^nd the 9^th is a brilliant Yoga-Karaka. And, Mercury and Venus, together, in a good house, the 1^st, the 4^th, the 7^th or the 10^th or the 5^th or the 9^th, particularly the 1^st or the 10^th, or the 7^th or the 2^nd gives very high Raja Yoga.

Chart No. 1 below is the horoscope of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the philosopher-statesman of India, who is an orator and who was Vice-President, and then the President (after Babu Rajendra Prasad) of the Indian Republic.

Mark the unsullied combination of Mercury and Venus in the Ascendant, the former being in own house and the latter having Neechabhanga – Raja Yoga. The combination is also responsible for his oratorical powers – see Venus lord of the 2^nd with Mercury lord of eloquence, in Lagna or the Ascendant, where Mercury has Digbala. Also, note that bad Mars (lord of the 3^rd and the 8^th) is placed in a capital or ideal place in the 3^rd, as lord of the 3^rd, avoiding the evil of the 8^th lordship, even apart from lord of the 8^th being good in the 3^rd, for longevity and for conquering enemies. Jupiter lord of the 4^th and the 7^th, also Badhakadhipati as the lord of the 7^th for a dual sign, is in the 3^rd a hidden house, aspecting the 7^th as lord of the 7^th. He prospered both in the British regime, and in the Congress regime, though he was not a Congressman, who never went to jai. In the freedom struggle.

By way of contrast, I give here the horoscope of the late Mr. Muthu Ramalinga Thevar, who was a bachelor, and a great orator in Tamil but who was detained in prison, tried in a Sessions case and acquitted, and who died at 53 or 54. If only he had confirmed himself to speeches on Hindu Religion, he would have been a great success in life.

See the debilitated Sun in the 2^nd house; and mark the excellent combination of Mercury and Venus (lords of the 1^st and the 10^th and the 2^nd and the 9^th) in Lagna, marred by Mars lord of the 3^rd and the 8^th and the aspect of Saturn lord of the 6^th.

Though the 1^st, the 5^th and the 9^th lords are combined only in the 12^th house yet they are fairly strong, as Venus lord of that house is in own house. See: Jupiter was in Lagna though in combustion within 6^oof the Sun, and aspected the 9^th, the house of fortune. True, the efficacy of Jupiter’s aspect will depend on his strength; for, the author of Uttara Kalamrita says an aspect is good and powerful only when the aspecting planet is in own house or in exaltation. At the same time, Kapila Nadi attributes efficacy to Jupiter’s aspect, even when he is in debility, or in combustion, as in this case; for, it says, though Jupiter may be burnt up in combustion by the Sun, his eyes are never burnt and his aspect has good effect. He died just before he was 60.

For Gemini Ascendant, Saturn lord of the 9^th (and the 8^th) may be in the 12^th as lord of the 8^th. The late Justice K.S. Krishnaswamy Iyengar was a Gemini native with Venus in the 5^th in Libra but Saturn in the 12^th, his success and prosperity as a Judge of the Madras High Court being in the Dasa of Venus lord of the 5^th (and the 12^th) excellency placed in the 5^th with Mercury, Jupiter being in Lagna. Jupiter for Gemini Lagna is lord of the 7^th and the 10^th. As a lord of quadrants, he has Kendradhipatya Dosh. But, I should pause for a moment, to point out, the Kendradhipatya Dosh or the evil of ownership of quadrants cannot and does not affect Yoga or prosperity; for, the evil relates to his Maraka powers (or death-inflicting powers) when placed in the 2^nd or the 7^th or any other marakasthana, like the 3^rd or the 6^th or the 8^th or the 12^th. As lord of the 7^th for a dual sign (Ubhaya Lagna) he becomes a baneful Badhakadhipati, so that some say that he is good when weak or in debility, and with instances like the horoscopes of late T.V. Muthukrishnier of the Madras Bar (one of whose sons passed the I.C.S.) and the late A. Lakshminarayanaier, a giant of the Madurai Bar, who (both) had Jupiter in debility in the 8^th for Gemini ascendant. I do not have the full horoscope of the first gentleman. But, the late A. Lakshminarayanaier had Badhra Yoga, due to Mercury lord of the 1^st and

The 4^th in Virgo, aspecting the 10^th, occupied by the Moon lord of the 2^nd and by Saturn lord of the 9^th. When the lord of the 2^nd is in the 10^th even a low-born becomes princely and rich. And, when Mercury lord of the Ascendant (and the 4^th), and so the ruling planet is in a Kendra from the house causing Bhadra-Yoga, the native comes up in life and speaks well in assemblies or courts. The forensic eloquence of the late A. Lakshminarayanier was remarkable. On a smaller scale. The late Sadhu Ganapathi Pantulu, a leading lawyer of Thirunelveli, had Jupiter and Mercury in the 4^th for Gemini Lagna.

The late V. Nadimuthu Pillai who inherited crores from his grandmother and was the main of Pattukottai and one of the leading men in Tanjore District, was a Gemini-native, with Mercury in the 4^th in own house and Venus in own house in the 5^th and Jupiter in the 8^th in debility. He got a son, late in life, through a second wife.

But, Jupiter in the 9^th or 10^th in own house is found to be good for Gemini. Mr. Krishnaswamy Iyer, a leading lawyer of Vellore, is a Gemini-native. But, Jupiter as lord of the 10^th in the 9^th is even better; for, a natural benefic like Jupiter or Venus owning a Kendra and placed in the 5^th or the 9^th is excelled only by a natural benefic owning a time (the 5^th or the 9^th) and placed in a Kendra (quadrant). I give below two horoscopes to illustrate my point:-

The period of Saturn gives success but marred by calamity if it is the 4^th Dasa, with special jurisdiction to kill. In the case of Mr. S. Doraiswamy Iyer of the Madras Bar, Jupiter and Saturn in debility in Aries ascendant made the native rise to the topmost rank of the Madras Bar, throw away a highly lucrative practice, and a good chance of High Court Judgeship, by renunciation, and migration to Sri Aurobindo’s Ashram in Pondicherry, an illustration of Parasara’s dictum regarding yoga-bhanga, whereas another native with Aries ascendant with Jupiter and Saturn (Badhaka in 9^th becoming Sadhaka) in 9^th in Sagittarius good for both, rose to the topmost position as the all-India Military Accountant-General.

Gemini-Ascendant

MALES or females born in Gemini generally have quick wits, vivacity and versatility, usually characteristic of Mercury lord of Lagna or Ascendant, provided Mercury is not weak by stay in the 6^th or the 8^th or the 12^th or in Neecha – Rasi (without Neechabhanga) or afflicted by a malefic, particularly Mars, the enemy of Mercury and lord of the 6^th and the 11^th for Gemini.

Mercury in the Ascendant with Venus, lord of the 5^th (and the 12^th) causes good Raja-Yoga, provided the combination is free from the affliction of Mars by combination or aspect, and Venus is not combust within 11^oof the Sun. Mercury in the 4^th in Virgo is very good, especially when with Venus, even if in debility, having Neechabhanga. In the December 1967 issue, I have given a horoscope with Mercury and Venus in the 10^th with Saturn lord of the 9^th whose native occupies a high position.

The Moon lord of the 2^nd is important for family and finance; and it would be wrong to say she is a maraca and hence may be crippled in debility or weak in the 3^rd or the 6^th or the 8^th or the 12^th though as New-Moon she is better in the 3^rd or the 11^th.

The Sun lord of the 3^rd is good, in the 3^rd or the 11^th, when in own house or exaltation.

Mars, the baneful lord of the 6^th and the 11^th, is rather bad for Gemini-people, and mars any Yoga or combination for prosperity and success. But, she is very good in the 11^th in Aries his Mooltrikona house, in view of the realistic dictum of Mantreshwara in his Phaladeepika, that when a planet owns two houses, one of which is a Dushsthana or bad house, viz, the 6^th or the 8^th or the 12^th, but occupies the other house owned by him, he gives the effects of the house or Bhava wherein he is posited and not the effects of the lord-ship also of a Dushsthana.

Here is a horoscope (Chart No. 1) to illustrate my point:

The native, now no more, had limited general education, but passed G.B.V.C. from the Veterinary College (as, then, there was no Veterinary College at Madras) and started service in the Veterinary College, Madras on Rs. 30 per month (though the value of the Rupee was, then, much higher). He rose to a gazette rank as a District Veterinary Officer, and finally acted as the Principal, Madras Veterinary College, on Rs. 900 – Rs. 1000 per month. And, even after retirement, he was the Chairman of the Committee to select candidates for the B.V.Sc. Course, after the advent of the B.V.Sc. Degree, to replace the G.M.V.C. Diploma. Mark the Moon lord of the 2^nd in the 10^th in Pisces, a watery planet in a watery sign, and Mars well-placed in isolation in the 11^th in own house. He was in the good books of his European Heads of the Department and no ill-wisher or enemy could touch him. Similarly, the evil of lordship is minimized by a conjunction or opposition of Jupiter and the Moon. For instance for Libra, if Jupiter lord of 3^rd and 6^th, alone in 9^th or 10^th, works harm and havoc; but the said Jupiter with the Moon is found to give affluence and prosperity. Similarly, while the Moon lord of the 6^th for Aquarius, in the 4^th in Taurus is bad and baneful if alone, is found to give fair prosperity though not very high prosperity, if and when with Jupiter, the Karaka for wealth and wealth-giving lord of 2^nd and 11^th.

With the above preamble and prefatory remarks, I shall, now, discuss Sri Parasara’s classification, Lagna-wise.

Aries – Ascendant

For Aries, he says, Saturn, Mercury and Venus are malefic; and, the Sun and Jupiter are benefics. The combination of 9^th and 10^th lords, Jupiter and Saturn, does not cause Rajayoga; in fact, Saturn (an enemy of Mars, lord of the ascendant and the baneful lord of 11^th for a cardinal sign) taints Jupiter by conjunction or aspect and mars the Rajayoga, rendering Jupiter a Papi (malefic). Venus lord of 2^nd 7^th may kill or inflict intense misery, unless she is in the 9^th or 11^th especially 9^th; but Mercury and Saturn are worse Marakas.

In this, there is no mention of the Moon or of Mars, as benefic or malefic. The Moon lord of 4^th and a friend of Mars must be regarded as a benefic, especially if full or if she is in own house (Cancer) or in exaltation in 2^nd in Taurus. Mars is predominantly the lord of the ascendant, as Aries is his Mooltrikona and not Scorpio the 8^th. Actually, Mars is benefic, if in Lagna in Aries, or in Scorpio (8^th); in the 7^th from Moon or in the 10^th in exaltation or in 8^th or 9^th with Jupiter or in the 4^th with Jupiter, especially with or in opposition to the Moon. Meshe jatasya bhoumastu gurunacha samanvitaha!

Chaturthastho yadi bhavedyogato bhavati dhruvam!!

Otherwise, despite the dictum that the lord of the 8^th though very evil, becomes a giver of good, if also lord of ascendant, the mischief of the 8^th lordship does come in to play havoc. Jupiter and Saturn are Dharmakarmadhipathis and do cause Rajayoga if, say, they combine in the 9^th in Sagittarius or if Jupiter in the 9^th aspects Saturn in 3^rd or if strong Jupiter powerfully aspects Saturn, unilaterally – for example Saturn in Pisces aspected by exalted Jupiter. Jupiter though lord of 12^th is mainly the lord of 9^th. He should be strong rather than weak. For the 9^th lordship predominates and when a natural benefic owns 12^th and is strong, there is affluence though the native, in the language of Samuel Johnson may only “live rich” and may not “die rich”!

For Aries ascendant generally makes the native poor even in cases of fair prosperity because of liberal and lordly spending and meager savings, as Jupiter lord of 9^th is also the lord of 12^th and hence does not conduce to conservation of wealth by any savings, unless Jupiter is with or in opposition to the full Moon in which case Gajakesari Yoga and Rajayoga due to the 4^th and 9^th lords override the evil of Jupiter’s 12^th lordship.

Natives born in Aries-ascendant generally prosper in the Dasas of the Sun lord of 5^th, the Moon lord of 4^th, Jupiter lord of 9^th and Saturn lord of 10^th and 11^th. The Dasas of Venus and Mercury are very seldom good for Aries-born, unless Venus and Mercury are in Adhiyoga configuration, or unless Mercury, for example, is in debility in the 12^th or Venus is in trine, especially 9^th.

Planets have dual nature. Jupiter, Venus, full Moon and well-associated Mercury are benefics by nature, while the Sun, new Moon, Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu are malefic by nature. But natural benefics become bad and baneful by virtue of the houses they own. For instance, Mercury lord of the 3^rd and 6^th for Aries-ascendant is bad, generally, while Venus lord of 3^rd 8^th for Pisces and Jupiter lord of 3^rd and 6^th for Libra-ascendant becomes baneful and evil for the respective Lagnas.

Similarly, Mars, generally evil by nature, is an excellent Mangla and Mangalakaraka (causing all auspiciousness) for Cancer-ascendant; as the splendid lord of 5^th and 10^th, and Saturn is a brilliant Yogakarka for Taurus as lord of 9^th and 10^th, and for Libra as the unsullied lord of 4^th and 5^th.

So, predictive astrology has to take note of the dual nature of planets, firstly by nature and secondly and specially by lordship. For instance, for Aries ascendant. Mercury lord of 3^rd and 6^th is well relegated to 12^th (debility in Pisces); but, then, his Karakatwa namely Vidya (education) and Vak (speech) will also be a little reduced, as also courage signified by the 3^rd house Gemini, as lord of 3^rd (avoiding much of the evil of 6^th) is an ideal position, reconciling the strength of matters like memory with the minimizing, though not entire elimination of the evil of the 6^th lordship, like Mercury in debility, in 12^th. Thus, for every Lagna, Sage Parasara has classified planets as benefics and malefic.

But, before I proceed to address myself to the well-known expert classification of planets as benefic and malefic for each Lagna, I should pause for a moment to point out two items of fundamental importance. Firstly the condemnation of planets like the lord of the 11^th for a cardinal sign or the lords of the 7^th for a dual sign or the lords of 2^nd and 11^th for Leo and Aquarius ascendants and Subhas (natural benefics) owning Kendras or quadrants as evil has relevance only to Maraka (death-inflicting nature) and not prosperity in life.

For Mercury lord of 2^nd and 11^th for Leo ascendant, for instance, when well placed in the 2^nd in Virgo or in 11^th in Gemini or in the 10^th Taurus of ascendant especially with the Sun lord of the ascendant or Venus can and does give great prosperity and wealth, especially if his (Mercury’s) Dasa runs in the life of the native. In fact, for sheer wealth, there is nothing so conductive as a good 2^nd and 11^th lord or a good combination of the lords of 2^nd and 11^th – for example of Venus and Saturn in 11^th in Libra for one born in Sagittarius, when the 6^th lordship of Venus does little mischief since Venus is in the better house 11^th (6^th from 6^th):

For, See: - Dusthanapasthadhithara swagrihasthasthihaschet Swakshetra bhavaphalameva karoti nanyat

Meaning, that if a planet owns two houses, one of which is a Dushsthana (6^th or 8^th or 12^th) but is in his own house (that is house other than Dushsthana) gives only the effects of the house, where he is placed so that Jupiter in the 9^th Sagittarius, for Aries-ascendant is placed in a capital position as lord of the 9^th in 9^th, and the evil of 12^th lordship is minimized and Venus in 3^rd Taurus for Pisces, functions as lord of 3^rd in 3^rd, mainly, avoiding the evil of the 8^th lordship as far as possible. Secondly, Athipatyam or lordship is irrelevant in Adhiyoga, for instance, formed by Mercury, Venus and Jupiter all the three natural, benefics, being in 6^th, 7^th and 8^th from the Moon or Lagna. The Dasas of the planets causing Adhiyoga give prosperous results:- for the dictum is:-

“Yasya yogasya yahkarta, balavan jitadrigyutha

Adhiyogadiyogeshu swadasayam phalapradaha.”

Tenth House: In so far as the person’s profession in the past was concerned, there was a tendency on the part of the person to be rather indecisive, irresponsible, perhaps shiftless, and so these qualities caused him to lose favor with superiors, bringing about a loss of position and a lack of advancement. These same qualities prevented the individual from achieving any degree of recognition in whatever field he chose to follow. It would be safe to say that there was a degree of craftiness and deceitfulness involved in not only the job, but also in any governmental affairs. This person could easily have been a minor official in some government position and use his authority and position for self-advancement materially.

Retrograde Mercury in the 10^th house stipulates discretion in speech, development of good perception, being observant and clever.

Any person with a retrograde Mercury in the 10^th house could be very successful in a commercial field, or in a governmental clerical type of situation, if he practices sincerity, honesty and dependability.

By transmuting the negative qualities of retrograde Mercury in the 10^th house, the person could do very well in some informational type of governmental service, or advertising.

Incidentally, the retrograde Mercury in the 10^th house emphasizes the karmic debt to the mother, and it is very important how this is worked out, since Mercury, retrograde or not, always indicates in a chart how we work out our karma, and this is the house of the mother, so there is a Karmic tie with the mother. The native of the chart must discover the means of working off this karma.

Eleventh House: Retrograde Mercury in the 11^th house deals with how we conducted our social life in the past, how we related in social functions, and what kind of friends we chose. Definitely, the friends were of a low type, more involved with physical activities – very possibly sexual activities – and more attention was placed upon the material types of social life – they were certainly not intellectually or culturally emphasized.

Many times, the retrograde Mercury in the 11^th house shows that the person deliberately chose or associated with inferior types of people so that he would be the center of attention, that these people would look up to him. Thus, the motives behind friends selected were negative and the social affairs and social activities would likewise be negative. It brings out the superficiality which often accompanies Mercury.

The individual lacked good communication with his peers and superiors and so resorted to those less intelligent, less refined than he. The individual also tended to use others for his own pleasure and gain.

The lesson of retrograde Mercury in the 11^th house is in being discriminative in selecting friends, in being a sincere friend, and in evaluating people properly. Social activities should center around mentally stimulating ones, and the ability to communicate with people on all levels should be developed.

Twelfth House: Primarily, retrograde Mercury in the 12^th house shows that the individual did not work out any of his karma in a past lifetime. It tells that the subconscious soul qualities were neglected and not demonstrated in the person’s journey through life. Impulsive speech, rash actions, false discrimination developed many resentments and secret enemies. Being opposite to the 6^th house, the native refused to accept the concept of service to others, and thus retarded his own spiritual development.

Here, the retrograde Mercury’s lesson is that the outer should reflect the inner, than the soul qualities must be developed and demonstrated in service to others. Self-awareness should be developed and coupled with group awareness as an over-all direction in life. Again, a sense of discretion should be developed where speech and action are involved in relations with others. Since Mercury is always involved with discrimination and judgements, anyone with a retrograde Mercury in the 12^th house must curb the tendency to judge too quickly and to evaluate others. Much attention should be placed on being aware of Karmic debts and working these out in the everyday facets of living.

The lesson to be learned, with retrograde Mercury in the 6^th house, is patience, understanding, respect for social trends, to be of service where public needs are concerned, without hope for personal reward.

Seventh House: This would indicate that, in the past, the individual was the cause of the dissolution of any partnership, be it job, or marriage. Undoubtedly, the important features concerned were, with retrograde Mercury, that of being overly critical, much too impatient, improper values, self-centeredness, unreliability, and, very possibly, deceit, not only to others, but self-deception as well (opposite the 1^st house of self).

The person with a retrograde Mercury in the 7^th house would certainly have not entertained the best of motives in any partnership established in a past lifetime, nor would that person have communicated his ideas properly and correctly.

Retrograde Mercury in the 7^th house requires that the individual be sincere, have proper motives, and rationalize carefully before entering into any partnership, be it marriage or job.

Eighth House: Here, too, this position shows that the person entertained low, materialistic values in the past, was superficially interested in the search for truth, was the cause of his own undoing when it was concerned with how things ended, whether it be a job, a project, or a friendship, or life itself. The person’s impulsiveness, rashness in both speech and action, caused all things to end negatively.

This could also have been the false prophet of the past.

The lesson to be learned here is to be more rational in thought and action, so that all things are completed positively and completely, nothing is left undone, and there are no repercussions. It requires that the person be sincere in the search for truth and how he communicates this to others, how he disseminates knowledge in a correct way.

This person must be very discriminative as to what groups he becomes involved with – should avoid witchcraft groups, followers of Satan, séances, etc. Truth should be understood and clarified in a practical, down-to-earth manner. By being an example of truth, he could transmute retrograde Mercury in the 8^th house in the finest way.

Ninth House: Here, the rashness of Mercury is also emphasized. The person with retrograde Mercury in the 9^th house could easily have been a tumble-weed in life, going from here to there, with no direction, no purpose, no plan. Similar to a retrograde Jupiter, it could indicate the individual who was a religious fanatic or bigot in the past, tolerating no one else’s opinion except his own. Improper speech and action in religious beliefs or philosophy caused animosities and enemities in the past (it does square the 12^th house of secret enemies).

Here, again, you have superficial knowledge and a lack of application of knowledge to actual living conditions. The person, undoubtedly, was involved with negative groups, whose activities brought him into conflict with accepted situations and/or the law. An afflicted Mars to retrograde Mercury would indicate that the person spent some time in confinement because of his actions and beliefs.

The lesson to be learned, with retrograde Mercury in the 9^th house, is a true search for higher knowledge and higher self, to live from the Christ center within, to see truth in all of its variables, to learn and apply this learning to all areas of life in a practical, down-to-earth manner. This person should respect all religions and all philosophies, even though contrary to his own. Despite his own beliefs, there needs to be a respect for law and order and for established institutions. Retrograde Mercury here also shows that the person must respect the rights and freedoms of others.
